Get Started!
At ShiftGrit, structure comes first—but integration follows. That means traditional models like CBT, DBT, ACT, and Schema Therapy are not used as standalone “patchwork” tools. Instead, they are strategically layered into our identity-level protocol, guided by the ShiftGrit Core Method™.
Schema Therapy in particular helps us give language and structure to the repeating loops of belief, need, and behaviour that drive identity-level struggles. We call these loops schemas—or more accessibly, lifetraps.
Over time, limiting beliefs and dysfunctional needs tend to cluster into predictable themes. Schema Therapy groups these into five major domains. Within each domain are common lifetraps that shape how we experience ourselves, others, and the world.
Lifetraps: Defectiveness/Shame, Emotional Deprivation, Social Isolation, Abandonment/Instability, Mistrust/Abuse
Pattern: Feeling unworthy of love or fearing rejection. Leads to withdrawal, mistrust, or desperate attempts to hold on to relationships.
2. Impaired Autonomy & Performance
Lifetraps: Failure, Dependence/Incompetence, Vulnerability to Harm, Enmeshment/Undeveloped Self
Pattern: Believing you cannot function independently or will inevitably fail. Leads to avoidance, underperformance, or over-reliance on others.
Lifetraps: Entitlement/Grandiosity, Insufficient Self-Control
Pattern: Difficulty respecting boundaries or regulating impulses. Leads to frustration, conflict, or problems with authority and responsibility.
Lifetraps: Subjugation, Self-Sacrifice, Approval-Seeking
Pattern: Prioritizing others’ needs to your own detriment. Leads to resentment, loss of self, or anxiety about rejection if you say “no.”
Lifetraps: Negativity/Pessimism, Emotional Inhibition, Unrelenting Standards, Punitiveness
Pattern: Striving for perfection or suppressing feelings to avoid mistakes. Leads to burnout, critical self-talk, or inability to relax and connect.
On its own, schema therapy is a powerful diagnostic framework. At ShiftGrit, we take it further:
Schema Naming → gives clients clarity and language for their repeating loops.
Core Method Integration → schemas are mapped into our three-phase process: Identity Patterns Therapy → Pattern Theory → Reconditioning.
Reconditioning → instead of simply noticing the schema, we rewire the emotional root so the old lifetrap no longer triggers automatically.
Lasting Change → new beliefs and behaviours emerge naturally—without forcing or constant coping strategies.
Think of it like our cupcake metaphor: the ShiftGrit Core Method™ is the cake (the structure), and schema therapy is the icing that adds clarity, flavour, and reinforcement—when clinically appropriate.
Want to see how these patterns map out? Explore our full Pattern Library, a structured set of identity-level schemas and lifetraps, each described in detail:
If you recognize yourself in any of these lifetraps—or feel stuck in emotional loops you can’t shake—therapy doesn’t have to mean managing forever. With the ShiftGrit Core Method™, schema therapy becomes a springboard for deep, identity-level change.
Book your consultation today and start reconditioning the patterns that have been holding you back.
Schema Therapy Integration at ShiftGrit
See how schema domains and “lifetraps” give diagnostic clarity—and how we layer them into the ShiftGrit Core Method™ to recondition identity-level patterns for lasting change. Schema Therapy Integration: How It Supports Identity-Level Change
Schema Therapy gives us the language for what repeats—domains like Abandonment, Over-vigilance, and Other-Directedness. At ShiftGrit, that clarity becomes a springboard: we map the loop (belief → need → coping), then use the ShiftGrit Core Method™ to recondition the emotional driver so new responses become automatic. In this presentation, we walk through real-world examples of mapping lifetraps, choosing targets, and stitching schema work into identity-level change—so clients aren’t just managing, they’re shifting.
Integrated Therapy Modalities
Ever wonder how CBT, DBT, ACT, and Schema Therapy fit into ShiftGrit’s Core Method™? This presentation shows how we layer these modalities strategically—reinforcing, not replacing—our identity-level protocol. Watch it here:
Integrated Therapy Modalities: How We Layer CBT, DBT, ACT, and Schema Into the ShiftGrit Core Method™
At ShiftGrit, structure comes first—but integration follows. This presentation explains how traditional approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Schema Therapy are not stand-alone solutions in our model. Instead, they are strategically layered into the ShiftGrit Core Method™ when clinically appropriate—icing on the cake, not the cake itself. You’ll see how each modality strengthens the protocol at different stages, giving clients clarity, reinforcement, and tools while their identity-level patterns are being reconditioned.
