At ShiftGrit Psychology & Counselling, we’ve found that many clients come to therapy not because they don’t know what’s wrong — but because they keep reacting in ways they can’t seem to change.
Pattern Theory is our structured framework for explaining those automatic emotional, cognitive, and behavioural loops that seem to run the show.
It helps answer the questions:
Why do I keep doing the same thing, even when I know better?
Why do I feel so triggered by certain situations or people?
Why can’t I just stop?
Most therapy clients arrive with symptoms — anxiety, burnout, relationship conflict, low motivation.
But beneath those symptoms are patterns: deeply ingrained belief systems formed early in life, often in response to what we call non-nurturing elements.
These beliefs might sound like:
“I’m not enough.”
“I have to be perfect to be accepted.”
“People will leave if I’m not useful.”
When these beliefs are triggered, the brain’s threat system — what we call the Walnut Brain — takes over. That’s when reactions feel automatic, overwhelming, or out of proportion.
Pattern Theory outlines a repeating cycle:
Limiting Belief
(e.g., “I’m not good enough”)
Dysfunctional Need
(e.g., “I need to be perfect”)
Pressure Cooker
(emotional strain from constantly trying to meet that need)
Opt-Out Behaviour
(e.g., snapping, procrastinating, isolating)
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
(the belief feels even more true)
This cycle explains why we stay stuck — and more importantly, where we can start to break it.
Pattern Theory gives you something many clients say they’ve never had before: a clear map of what’s going on.
It’s not just a story about your past — it’s a tool for changing your future.
It’s also the foundation for Identity Patterns Therapy, where we combine psychoeducation with reconditioning techniques that help clients move from insight to automatic change.
